Creating Your Own Thing
I don’t feel at ease unless I’m creating something. It doesn’t really matter what it is, I just have to be active. The thing could even be failing from start to finish and I’ll still continue working on it. People need to create and things need to be created. That’s one of the great things about music and animation. An artist can keep creating in the same vein of the same creature for years. With the good, there are some obstacles that get in the way of creating your own thing. The first obstacle is a job. Devoting your time and attention to a 9 – 5 robs you of your two most precious assets, your time and attention. When you are creating something of your own, you have to spend these two assets wisely.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with having a job. Having a job can help you to decide what it’s important to you and what isn’t. Let’s say you start on a project that requires at least 3 hours of work per day for you to meet your deadline. However, you use an hour preparing for work, an hour driving to get there, 8 hours working, plus 2 hours of overtime. Then, when you get home you’ve got to clean and do chores, maybe run to the store and by the time all of that is done you have a limited amount of time left before you have to get some sleep so you can do it all again. Well, this is where you begin to prioritize things. Do you watch a couple episodes of Netflix or do you write a few pages of music? Do you eat the food that you’ve been daydreaming about or do you get a good workout.
