I’ve been so busy with my own work that I’ve completely forgotten about Electric Forest 2024. Just about every festival that has passed since winter has slipped my mind. I just saw a post on Twitter by Kyle Hollingsworth who had just stolen someone’s cart in Forest. Shame on you Kyle, but I agree. Steal that cart, as long as you help other people and quickly bring it back. That’s how we all roll #PLUR.

My First Electric Forest

I can’t remember what year it was that I did my first Forest. It happened by accident, actually. There may have been 1 or 2 other festivals before that but I don’t remember too clearly. Anyway, my point is that I never intended on going to a music festival. Not on purpose. I’ve never been interested in being outside around thousands of strangers just wandering around like zombies. Maybe, 4 years ago, when I heard the word festival, images of medieval garments, dresses, hay and donkeys would come to my mind. I’d imagine wooden toilets with no water that lead directly to the grass on the ground. I have no idea why the word festival and that specific piece of scenery are tied together for me but that’s the primary reason I never went to one.

First Time In Sherwood

The first time that I realized that I was walking through a nationally known location, Sherwood Forest, I heard a magical, feminine voice floating over the restrooms and through the leaves. I rushed away from the food area towards the stage that I thought this sound was coming from. It was a lady singing but, I couldn’t tell if it was live or recorded. No one should be performing yet, the Forest just opened. I walked across an empty field with a fifteen dollar beer in hand to discover Sylvan Esso. This was the first time that I had ever heard of them. I was so impressed because I didn’t think it was real. Keep in mind, this might have been my 4th beer in like thirty minutes, the park was still quite empty. I wanted her to know how great she sounded, she seemed kind of annoyed. That was cool with me, at least she told me her name.

The Status of Hip Hop Today

Allow me to give you my slightly educated opinion on the status of hip hop today. First off, hip hop is no longer a genre that focuses on the artistry of the discipline. Rapping is all about gathering followers and earning money, that’s it. I that there were arguments in the past that rap is separate from hip hop but I disagree. Maybe historically, but certainly not now.

Why Is Hip Hop So Vulgar??

I’m a huge fan of music. Instruments guide my life from day to day. The human voice is also another great instrument that accompanies the sound of a band. With bending vowels and percussive consonants, vocals can give a song fullness and completion. However, most of our hip hop and/or rap songs cover three primary topics; sex, drugs and money. That’s all. I had finally had enough of it when I heard a Black man reciting the lyrics to a song that talked about shooting another Black man and knocking the dreads out of his head. How can you celebrate that??

Who’s That Singing??

Recently, I asked a current rap fan to show me a rap song that he really liked. I was trying to observe this relationship and get a good understanding for why he liked the song. Well, the rapper sang the whole time. He never rapped. I couldn’t even get started with understanding this fan because he thought this singing was rap. We were done with the investigation before it even got started.

Hot Weather on BC Monday

Chicago had some hot weather on BC Monday this week. The temperature inside the Glenwood Roller Rink was high. Many of us were drenched in sweat before the warmup songs finished. The floor felt nice though, it wasn’t dangerously slippery or mysteriously sticky. The conditions were just right. Even though the city had some hot weather on this BC Monday, I prefer that over cold air hitting my sweaty body during a session.

Slippery Floors or Dirty Wheels

I’ve learned that often times when the floors feel slippery but not everyone agrees with you, then the problem may be your wheels. Several time during this session I kept rolling through blobs of sticky dirt that gathered on my wheels. I could feel it rumbling between my wheels and the skate floor. It feels like I rolled over a small wad of gum.

Hot Weather In Chicago

There’s something about the hot weather that just makes the hood erupt, it happens every year. I always advise people close to me to stay away from bad situations. No need to rush into a confrontation. They are going to happen. Problems come every year, especially when the weather is hot. So, keep your cool, keep your distance and keep your freedom.

How to choose a pair of skates

Knowing how to choose a pair of skates can save you some time and money in the future. Coming from someone who has bought skates that did not work out, I would like to provide a bit of guidance. Here is what I learned. First, it’s better to buy your first few boots at a lower price. You might not like them as time goes one. Second, I recommend trying on that first pair of skates before you buy them. Finally, have an idea of how you intend to skate before you make your purchase.

Choose a pair of skates at a lower price

This can be a better option if you prefer to hold on to a little bit of cash. Remember, this first pair is more like a test purchase. You’re feeling them out to see if this is the style and brand that you want to stick with permanently. There are many parts to consider when making this initial purchase. You will need to know the size of the toe stops, the length of the laces, the type of plate, the wheels and the bearings that will be associated with your skate. With all of this factored in, you’ll have a better idea of how much you will need to spend for that perfect pair.

Try on the boot before you buy

I know from experience how much it can slow you down to have a boot that doesn’t fit correctly. You don’t want a boot that’s too big. There will be too much space in the heel and the toe. Then, the boot will wobble on your foot, and you don’t have the support that you need. Your boot could also end up being too small. You don’t want to be in pain while you’re skating. Also, let’s assume you’re buying a pair of boots for a pair of plates that you have. If your boots aren’t the proper size, then they won’t fit the plates. It’s best to have all of your equipment together for the purchase.

McDonalds In Louisville

Today, I decided to break fast this morning with a little bit of food from a McDonalds in Louisville. Normally, I don’t really eat there anymore but today I made an exception. I always use the app to order. In most cases, I prefer to avoid communicating directly with the staff at the counter. Here I am, sitting at a McDonalds in Louisville.

The environment is wet from the rain in Louisville today. Clouds fill the atmosphere and block out the sun. The rain began to pour as I drove into the city from the south. I’ve got my laptop connected to the free McDonald’s Wi-Fi. This is another thing that I would not normally do.

Nashville Weather in May

It’s a beautiful day and Nashville weather is showing its self in pure splendor. I crept out of my hotel room like a dormant, shaggy wolf. A stroll in the sunlight, talking to the trees, balanced my thoughts and energy. I spent the morning claiming my assets and treasures. They’re all mine. This universe lets me have them.

It feels so nice to walk down streets lined with greenery. The trees are tall, old and they have plenty of company from the shrubs and grass underneath them. This morning, I walked around and introduced myself to some new friends. Now, they all know my name.

Years have passed since I’ve let my skin cook under the contact of the burning sun. The winter months of Chicago seem to dominate the plus-part of the year, keeping the skies in shadow and grim solace. Lol, does that even make any sense?? I don’t know. Maybe to some it does.

The Book of the Dead is on its way.

This album has been in the oven for like three years. But that’s okay. The question that I have, the PRIMARY question that I have is, how many songs is sufficient for JBSKATERS for a JBSKATE album. I’m not even sure how many songs is efficient enough for me.

Also, bear with me when I say this, or don’t, I’m saying it anyway. This album is not full of bangers. It’s a compilation of songs that I made on the first try. These are first round, draft pick songs and not remixes. You can take that and use it how ever you want. My bottom line is, these are ORIGINAL JBSKATE SONGGGSSS. Songssss… my brethen. These be-ith songs!! Y’all ain’t even heard remixes yet. All of the platonic, physical and metaphysical geography of the North American continent is gonna tremble when JBGODS starts RE-mixing original JBGODS Songs.

I have to be honest, this first album was quite difficult for me. My musical repertoire and library are quite large, so I can share that insecurity with the public. I have no shame at all there. At some point, in the near future, JBSKATE music will be a household name. People will know this subgenre of Chicago house music evenly with roller skating and movie music.

My new duty is to make this happen, it’s my commitment. As the gods continue to grow, learn, create and destroy, we’ll take on bigger and better opportunities to provide the music world with great media to enjoy.

The new JBGODS music library is here. The first songs are already posted. We truly have something great here. Our history, as JBGODS, is already being preserved. Sooner or later, this will be the very fabric that covers the financial dependencies of all our lives. In other words, we’ll be paying ourselves to skate. That’s it. No other responsibilities or obligations. We skate. We are professional skaters.

All I write is books. One day there will be a small section of every library that holds reference to the work that we are putting in now. At some point, we’ll be able to reference ourselves.
